Pool Surround Cleaning
Restore pool surrounds, coping, and pavers with safe high-pressure cleaning that protects the pool itself.
Pool surrounds sit in the worst environment of any hardscape around a Brisbane home: constant moisture from splash and humidity, direct sun bleaching, organic debris from surrounding plants, and the slow accumulation of sunscreen, body oils, and other residues. The result is a surround that goes slippery, discoloured, and visibly older than the pool itself. Pool surround cleaning is one of our higher-attention jobs because of the proximity to the pool: we mask off returns and skimmers, direct rinse water away from the pool edge, and use chemistry that will not affect pool water if traces drift in. The result is a surround that looks like new without disturbing the pool.
The pool-side complications
Three things make pool surrounds different from a standard patio. First, we cannot let cleaning chemistry drift into the pool: sodium hypochlorite at our soft-wash concentrations will not damage a pool but can throw the chemistry balance off and trigger a shock event or pH swing. Second, we cannot direct high-pressure rinse water at any of the pool fittings (returns, skimmers, lights) because that can dislodge sealants. Third, rinse runoff needs to go somewhere other than the pool, so we plan the rinse direction before starting. All of this is standard practice for us and adds about 15 minutes of setup time to a pool-surround job versus a standard patio.
Materials and technique
Concrete pool decks are the most common Brisbane material and respond well to standard surface cleaner work. Concrete pavers are similar with the usual paver caveats around joint sand. Travertine and natural stone surrounds need the lowest pressure end and chemistry-led cleaning because high pressure can pit the natural surface; we test on an inconspicuous corner first. Travertine in particular holds algae in its natural pits, which is a feature in dry climates but a problem in Brisbane's humidity. Tile pool surrounds (often with a textured non-slip surface) clean well but the textured surface holds grime, so we work in smaller passes. The coping (the edge of the pool, often a different material from the surround) gets individual attention because that is the most visible surface from inside the pool.
Common pool-surround issues we handle
Black mould bands in the shaded sections behind landscaping. Slippery algae film across the whole surround, dangerous in summer. Sunscreen and body-oil staining concentrated on the edges where people enter and exit the pool. Plant tannin staining under overhanging trees or shade sails. Rust streaks from pool furniture, ladders, or sun lounges. Sealer-failure spots where the original concrete sealer has worn through and the surface is staining unevenly. Mineral deposits along the pool edge from evaporation. Each gets its own pre-treatment where needed, then the surface cleaner pass for the main surround.
Our pool surround cleaning process
Step one: mask off returns, skimmers, lights, and any pool-side fittings. Step two: lay absorbent matting or plastic sheeting around the pool perimeter to catch any drift. Step three: pre-wet plants and beds around the pool. Step four: pre-treat targeted stains (mould bands, sunscreen edges, rust streaks). Step five: surface cleaner pass on the main surround, with rinse direction planned away from the pool. Step six: hand-wand detail on coping, around the pool ladder, and along any tile edges. Step seven: final rinse with the runoff directed to street drainage or garden beds, never into the pool. Step eight: remove all masking, walk the result with you, and confirm the pool itself has not been affected.
Timing: when to clean a pool surround
October to November is the best time to book a pool surround clean before the summer swimming season. The surround sits dry through winter and accumulates the previous summer's residues, so a spring clean returns it to peak condition for the season. End-of-summer cleans (March-April) are also common as the heavy-use period winds down. Avoid booking the day before a pool party or major event. Let the surround dry fully (2-4 hours) before heavy use. Pool surround cleaning is also a popular pre-sale booking because the visible improvement on listing photos is significant.
Pricing for pool surround cleaning
Pool surround cleaning runs $200 to $500 depending on size and material. Small surrounds (around the spa or a plunge pool, 10-15m²) start at $200. Standard pool surrounds (25-40m²) run $300 to $450. Larger surrounds with multiple materials, extended decking, or extensive detail work run $450 to $700. Combined with a patio or driveway clean, the rate per square metre drops because setup is shared. We quote the whole job as a fixed figure including any pre-treatments and masking work.

Frequently asked questions
Will the cleaning chemistry affect my pool water?
No. We mask off pool fittings and direct runoff away from the pool. The chemistry we use is biodegradable and at concentrations that would not damage pool water even if traces drifted in. We have not had a customer report a pool chemistry issue after a surround clean.
Can you clean travertine pool surrounds?
Yes. Travertine gets the lowest pressure end and chemistry-led cleaning. We test on an inconspicuous corner first. The natural pits in travertine hold algae but also rinse cleanly with the right technique.
Do you clean around the pool tile and coping?
Yes. Coping and pool-edge tile get individual attention with a hand wand because they are the most visible surfaces from inside the pool. We avoid direct high-pressure spray at tile grout joints to protect any sealant.
When is the best time to clean my pool surround?
October to November before the summer swimming season, or end-of-summer in March-April. Avoid the day before a pool event because the surround needs 2-4 hours to fully dry before heavy use.
Can I use the pool the same day as the clean?
Yes, once the surround is dry (2-4 hours after the rinse finishes). The chemistry is fully rinsed by then and the surface is safe to walk on barefoot and to lounge on.
